13000 pcs Philips LED plant light built the new plant factory in Osaka

Osaka Prefecture University discloses the internal situation of “Green Cock Next-generation (GCN) of plant factory of Osaka Prefecture University,” on September 17, 2014,. The plant uses the LED plant light developed by Philips Electronics Japan (Headquarters: Tokyo, referred to as Philips) for breeding. The large plant factory erected in Osaka Prefecture and known as Japan’s fifth-largest plant factory was opened in September 19 2014 and will formally put into production in early October. Philips hopes accumulated technical experience through the plant factory to sell their products in Japan.

The plant factory uses 13,000 Philips “Green Power LED Production Module”. This is the Lighting equipped with LED chip with far infrared light (750nm wavelength in the vicinity) for the first time, which can emit four kinds of light including red, blue, white and far-infrared light. The light the plant factory accustomed to using is usually red, blue and white, it is because that the red and blue light are better for plant photosynthesis, while the use of far infrared light can improve the efficiency of photosynthesis to accelerate the growth rate. Osaka Prefecture University said: “because the LED plant light can promote plant growth, and has excellent dust and water resistance” (Director of Research Center of Osaka plant factory Prefectural University said), so using the Green Power LED Production Module.

There are just 40 days from sowing to harvest Lettuce and other plants of the plant factory. According to the company, compared with ordinary fluorescent lighting, the LED plant light make the cultivated time shortened by 20%, power consumption can be reduced by 55%. Since LED plant light generate very little heat, so the electricity used to manage the temperature of the air conditioning can also be saved.

The plant is invested and built by cooperation projects of Osaka Prefecture University and a number of enterprises, covering an area of approximately 1300㎡, producing 5000pcs lettuce and other leafy vegetables every day. The vegetables produced and dubbed “Gakuen food” brand will be directly supplied to supermarkets and restaurants in Osaka Prefecture. Because there are fewer bacteria carried on vegetables and short the transport distance, so saving time is nearly two times over the vegetables cultivated in the open-air. Although the price will be higher than ordinary vegetables, but commercial operation will be performed by ensuring quality and establishing a stable supply system. If there is demand, but high value-added vegetables without potassium (K) and vegetables also can be produced.

Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp vigorously promote the use of LED grow lighting applied in plant factory

Panasonic launched the Singapore’s first government-approved indoor vegetable plants on July 2014,which is used to cultivate the lettuce leaves and other 10 kinds of vegetables, annual output is 3.6 tons. The company will in cooperation with the Japanese restaurant chain named “big house” to offer the vegetables to the outlets in Singapore. Panasonic introduced the LED grow lighting and other equipment for the plant, and will strive to shorten the cultivation time and improve production efficiency per unit of cultivated area.

Why the Panasonic chose Singapore is because that only 8% of vegetable consumption in the country is locally produced. The company plans to make that the vegetable production of plant factory reaches by 5% of that of the country by the end of March 2017 with the help of LED grow lighting.

Toshiba announced on May 2014 that it would start heavily using the LED grow lighting and other agricultural facilities to built the plant factory named “Toshiba clean room farm Yokosuka,” in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture for the production of pesticide-free vegetables with long conservation and conduct related business. The company plans to plant lettuce leaves, spinach, turnips, etc. Japan.

According to reports, in addition to the LED grow lighting, the plant factory will use technology and experience owned by Toshiba in multiple fields. For example, the fluorescent whose wavelength of light is optimized for plant growth and the remote monitoring system used to master cultivation conditions,as well as the production management technology in the semiconductor business. The scale of production is scheduled for 3 million (by lettuce conversion). Toshiba will build a large plant factories aboard and began selling the LED grow lighting and other agricultural equipment and systems used in the factory throughout the 2014.

Sharp built the plant laboratory building factory cultivating the strawberries in Dubai to, and has started to experiment. The company introduced the electronic technology sharp specialized in for laboratory buildings, including the LED grow lighting technology and air management technology based on a plasma cluster. By using these technologies, sharp can very carefully control the  growth environment of Strawberries. The company intends to carry out a variety of empirical experiments to achieve operational objectives.

Although the strawberries made in Japan very popular in the Near East and other regions, but because of the perishable perishable, intolerant store, it is difficult to flow in overseas markets. Sharp intends to adopt the LED grow lighting in the plant factory to achieve annual local consumption of fresh strawberries.
